turtles and dugong

The Program

BY SPEEDBOAT

In this trip, you will be taken by a air-conditioned minibus to the port of Hermes, which is 35 km south from the Marsa Alam Airport. From there, you will go on a speedboat.

Initially, there will be an attempt to encounter the local dugongand dive with it. Afterward, you will be taken to Abu Dabbab Bay, which is just five minutes away by speedboat. There, you will dive and observe the colorful reef and giant turtles feeding on the seagrass field.

The trip lasts for about three hours and then you will be taken back safely to your hotel. This trip is bookable for the morning or afternoon. The minimum number of people required for a speedboat is 4, and the maximum is 8.

Manatee/ Dugong (Dugong dugon)

The Dugong can reach up to four, but usually three meters in length and weigh anywhere from 230 to 900, but usually around 400 kg. The front flippers, which are 35 to 45 cm long, are used for propulsion by young Dugongs, whereas adult Dugongs primarily use these flippers for steering while relying on the tail fluke for propulsion. Dugongs can move at approximately 10 km/h, with double the speed in times of urgency. Dugongs are purely herbivorous, feeding on seagrass. They are believed to live for over 60 years.
